BOSS (eng) BOSS (eng)

Background

The BOSS Scale is an 11-item questionnaire designed to assess trait boredom within sports and exercise settings. Adapted from the learning-related boredom subscale of the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ; Pekrun et al., 2011), the BOSS demonstrated excellent internal consistency in its validation study and was significantly associated with self‑reported exercise behavior, attestting to its criterion validity. Additionally, BOSS scores showed positive correlations with general boredom proneness and negative correlations with trait self‑control and planning, thereby supporting the scale’s convergent validity.

Adminstration

Administration

The BOSS can be administered in an online or in a paper-and-pencil format. Completing it takes about 2-3 minutes. Participants rate each of the eleven items on a 5- or 7-point Likert scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree.

Instruction

The instructions used for the BOSS focus on sports and exercise. They can also be adapted to other contexts, such as physical activity, by changing the wording of the instruction and the items.

Scoring and interpretation

An overall score for the scale is obtained by averaging a participant’s ratings across all eleven items. The items are formulated in the same direction so that no reverse-coding is neccessary. A higher BOSS score indicates a higher level of boredom in sports and exercise contexts.

FAQ

Can I use the BOSS in my study?

Yes. Just make sure to give appropriate credit in the resulting publications (see above).

Can I translate or otherwise modify the BOSS?

Yes. You can adapt the VoPE scale in any way you want, including translations into other languages. Just make sure to give appropriate credit in the resulting publications (see above).
